When the weather warms up and schools break up, kids look to enjoy many activities. We have five hot tips (excuse the pun!) for you to ensure your kids enjoy the holidays whilst staying safe and healthy.
Have a First Aid Kit Handy!
Emergency situations can arise at any time so it is best to be prepared. Keep your first aid kits somewhere easily accessible in your home and car, and tell older children where they are and how to use them. Don’t know what to include in your first aid kit? Have a look at this article for inspiration.
Ensure Your Pool Is Safe
In the warmer months, it’s the perfect time to take a dip in a refreshing backyard pool. It provides kids with hours of entertainment and exercise – but don’t forget, safety first! The backyard pool can be a massive safety hazard for your young ones, so it’s important to take a few precautions before diving in. Some safety tips are to install a fence, have rescue equipment handy, ensure there are no slip hazards each time before use, store pool chemicals away safely, inspect drain covers, have the family learn first aid and CPR, teach your kids to swim and never allow kids to swim unattended.
Learn CPR and First Aid
Why not get the whole family confident in administrating first aid and CPR? Learning first aid and CPR is so important because you could save someone’s life. So get the family involved and discover simple to follow steps for emergency care with an Emergency First Response© (EFR) course.
Stay Hydrated
During hot days it is easy to become dehydrated – even more so for kids. Children have a larger proportion of their skin available to lose sweat and be exposed to heat. Plus, children aren’t as aware that they are thirsty so they may need a little prompting. Signs to look out for dehydration include headaches, poor concentration, cracked lips, constipation, lacking energy, dark urine and the obvious one, thirst.
Get Electricity Safe
We know that electricity and electrical devices are not toys but are your children aware of the dangers? Power points, cables and electrical devices can be intriguing for your little ones with all those buttons and switches, so it is important to do a thorough safety check of our homes. Things to look out for include making sure no power points are exposed and that power boxes are locked, ensuring electrical cords are stored away safely so little hands can’t get to them and educating your kids on the danger of electricity. A big one to keep in mind during the warmer months is that water and electricity do not mix!
With proper first aid training from an experienced instructor, you will be prepared to respond to any emergency situation that may arise. Learn more about our EFR courses and contact an Emergency First Response course provider today!
